The spreads try to mimic a sense of dynamic movement and motion similar to parkour. It is all about navigating skillfully through your environment, which is exactly the concept applied to the spreads.

The main article spread has an interesting sequential visual that shows some of Ian’s top moves. This helps create a sense of fluidity in the main spread where the reader ends up at the top left image

A rough concept for the magazine identity - RUSH magazine (an arts & sports lifestyle magazine for parkour enthusiasts). The diagonal mark symbolizes movement converting the P into an R.

TYPOGRAPHY POSTER - Ballot or the Bullet

The concept was to represent both the words BULLET and

BALLOT in the same plane. Since the words are so similar in

structure and size, it became apparent to transpose one over

the other. Opaque typography was utilized rather than employ

the conventional multiply effect to represent both the words.

“ It’ll be the ballot or it’ll be the bullet.

It’ll be liberty or it’ll be death.

And if you’re not ready to pay that

price don’t use the word freedom in

your vocabulary. ”

Final illustration for "Children's Mental Health Awareness Poster". The application of a dark background with the texture helps set the desired mood.

An alternative approach that uses a white background that mimics a padded room. It gives the illustration a cleaner yet clinical feel. I felt that the direction with the darker background was better.

DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION - Children’s Mental Health Awareness Poster

Concept - A young girl (wrapped in a straight jacket) innocently looks out to a butterfly symbolizing freedom and hope. The straight jacket is a powerful symbol of mental illness (of being “crazy”), which gets enhanced when a child is placed in it. The illustration also serves as a metaphor of a cocoon; similar to the situation faced by many children with mental illness.

Had an hour to come up with an identity for a famous romantic person for Valentines day assignment. I chose to create a logo for Shah Rukh Khan (one of the top Bollywood actors alive today).

The following images showcase some of the progress work. This is the stage where I had just finished laying the illustration framework. I realized that the image was too bright and happy for the given

The introduction of a dark gradient )top and bottom) helped frame the central image as well as darken the overall composition.

Darkening the background helped set the ambience and emotion for the cover. The message seemed to become a bit more clear. However, the rendering for the drops and the cracked glass needed work.

Re-rendered the drops/cracks to make it visually fit with the rest of the illustration.

At this stage, I felt that the illustration was too cold and the skin tones needed to be a bit warmer. I also decided to reduce the number of drops as can be seen in the final illustration (next).

Laying the foundation for the portrait. I knew I wanted to keep the final illustration very simplistic with an emphasis on line.

Final Illustration. I think I will adopt this as a personal style for doing portraits/profiles.

Test 1 - While I was experimenting with the lines, I noticed that slight changes in the lips totally changed the emotion/expression of the character. He looks confused in this one.

Test 2 - Adding that curve to the upper lip makes his expression more urgent, almost as if he is grinding his teeth together.

Removing the glasses exposes his eyes to the viewer, giving it an even more serious expression.

Final Zebra illustration.

Process - Initial sketches were done for a wildbeest. I switched to a zebra as I wasn't liking the direction the wildebeest was taking and figured it would be interesting to play around with stripes.

Process - I pitched the concept of spot illustrations showcasing the animal in its food form... but that got rejected real quick.

Initial illustrator composition - I loved the streamlined face, but it started looking more like a racehorse.

Modified the linear to make it more plumpy and zebra-like.

Final outline.

Experimenting with the stripes. This was more of a loose line scribble approach.

By slicing and deleting segments, I stumbled upon this effect by accident. A happy accident if you will.

Playing around with coloured shadows. - Although the illustration looks really good in black and white, I wanted to introduce a bit of colour for the purpose of the assignment.

Concept sketches - I was exploring a more conceptual angle where the drill is FRACturing the arm of a person, which in turn is making him drop the glass of water (water waste).

Concept sketches - This is a more direct communication approach that showcases the person drinking contaminated water with the drill schematic placed within the glass of water.

Concept sketches - Exploring options utilizing the drill bit. This approach seemed a bit too cliche/expected, and so was dropped early on.

Playing around with layouts.

Zooming in on the illustration helps bring everything together. I really like this bold conceptual approach but the message does get a little distilled. It potentially speaks to workplace safety.

Final selection - The drinking glass concept was chosen based on its strong graphic as well as clear message. Time to move to the digital composition.

The online interactive interface for the website. It will act as a living breathing environment.

Clickable elements get highlighted when the user scrolls over them.

Clicking on the element initiates small animations and opens up an information window.

Clicking different elements (example - clicking the submarine opens up discovery info) opens up different information boxes.

CPAWS FINAL - INTERACTIVE
Upon arrival at the website, a motion graphic of the primary visual is played, where the user is taken underwater to the City of Glass. Similar to the brochure, there is a reveal at the end but this platform is much more dynamic and interactive. Various elements such as the marine life will be animated and fluid. The user can interact with the various elements by clicking on them. Further information and animations are revealed when the user clicks on something. The layout was kept simple, and the call to action function was placed directly under the visual. This makes it easy for the user to enter their name and email to sign the petition. Social media links were also placed so that the user can promote, like, share, and engage the site with others.

We wanted to create a sense of immersion through our CPAWS project. The glass sponge reefs were rebranded as a destination, rather than an individual entity. It’s not just about the sponges, rather its about the entire ecosystem, which we wanted to emphasize via the City of Glass concept. We really wanted to take the audience down to the ocean floor. Since that environment (the glass sponge reefs) are not visible to us. We wanted to create a sense of adventure and journey putting a focus on an almost theatrical experience. Vancouver is also known as the City of Glass, which we felt would add another dimension.

Online banner ad - it follows the same vertical format as the other collateral.

CPAWS Advertising -

We wanted to create a sense of mystery and wonder through a special ad campaign by only showing the top half of the visual scene. The City of Glass (the reefs) is replaced by a QR code that the viewer can scan. Upon scanning the QR code, an augmented reality of the glass sponge reef is activated onto the surface of the ad, which is viewer through the user’s phone. This interactive visual is the same as that on the interactive website. The ad can be further implemented as an online web banner ad on key websites.

Starting on the basic layout structure for the infographic. Key elements include the intro, timeline, map, hazards/facts, marine life and the call to action.

Refining the typography and also setting the layout more approriately. Rough visuals and icons were added as placeholders. The reef location points were changed from blobs to sonar type markers.

The typography was adjusted to be more cohesive with the italic and serifs on the front of the brochure. The call to action panel was changed as it looked too much like a coupon.

The final infographic - All the visuals and type were refined along with color corrections to match the front. Textures and details were also added to give it some umph.

CPAWS Infographic - These images show the progression of the infographic on the backside of the brochure. The dinosaur used in the timeline was finally ditched for a more straight-forward approach.

CPAWS inspiration - This little infographic booklet for the Ocean Fresh movement did a good job at effectively communicating its central messages in a fresh and clean manner. We wanted to use some of the elements such as icons and symbols in our own infographic to give it that clean look.
